Great Attractor

Featuring Miriam Clancy

Miriam Clancy’s second album, Magnetic was released in October 2009. Coming over three years after her debut album Lucky One, it was hotly anticipated.

Universally praised by critics and fans, Magnetic upped the ante for Miriam who teamed up with accomplished producer Andre Upston to achieve an extraordinary, high quality production marking a significant departure from the simpler, alt-country sound of Lucky One.

The first signs of the album came with the release of the single When I Do. The funky, sci-fi-esque video complements a modern, not-quite-pop yet very catchy tune. But listen closely and you will hear that same, incredible voice that is Miriam’s hallmark.

As on her debut album Lucky One, the songs on Magnetic do not fall easily into any genre or category. Consistently, however, with breathy, barely spoken words to punchy chorus, quiet acoustic to rousing rock, Miriam tells her stories with an accuracy of enunciation and emotion that captivates you every time you listen.

These things change, I do notice. It really depends on what I’m listening to at the time, where I feel like I’m heading, what I want to say and also what instrument I prefer to write on at the time. If I’m writing on keyboards or piano it really does shape a genre-specific song – gives it a different sound to if I was sitting down with a guitar.

Alternative folk rock is probably where I’d slot myself because it gives you a bit more scope.

Magnetic is another album you can listen to over and over again and only appreciate it more with each listen. If Lucky One heralded Miriam’s arrival, Magnetic signals she is here to stay, in our hearts.
