Featuring Miriam Clancy

Miriam Clancy began singing in public at the tender age of 16, when she began singing cover songs in pubs with local musicians in her home town, Foxton.
She progressed to corporate gigs, jazz bands and clubs, now in major New Zealand cities, and even a trip to Malaysia with Ted Clarke’s Backdoor Blues Band before singing in various bands (The Rockafellas, The Lyn Buchanan Band, with Del Piranha and the Rhythm Kings) back home.
In 2001 she stopped the constant gigging and opted to concentrate on songwriting – her real passion.
I guess it’s just gut instinct really. I could not sooner stop writing and making music than I could stop breathing. I think it’s part of my genetic make up.
After playing in small Auckland clubs she took a trip to Los Angeles where her material blossomed. Her debut album Lucky One, released in 2006, marked her arrival as a singer-songwriter with its uncomplicated and raw, alt-country feel and showcased her exceptional vocal talent, rarely backed by more than a couple of instruments.
Even though the album is very simple in style overall, Miriam proved to everyone that she wasn’t constrained to just the one style. The song Don’t Let It Get You Down was made into a punchy, hooky single complete with video funded by New Zealand On Air. The result gives some insight into where her next album would go.
When listening to any of the tracks on Lucky One, you cannot help but be captivated by Miriam’s versatile and endearing voice, telling stories of great emotion. It is an album you can listen to many, many times and never tire of.
